The Fries family near Augsburg has found its niche and built an animal welfare stable for pigs for their catering company Baurerwanger.de.

Initially, the Ries family had a breeding farm with 150 sows in a cramped location in the small town of Westendorf near Augsburg. The passionate BBQ master Herbert Fries has been grilling suckling pigs for 33 years as a part-time business.

Six years ago, his own catering company was founded with his sons. After a short transition phase to the production of system piglets in the old barn, the plan to build a new barn for "only 25 sows in a closed system" to produce high-quality meat for the company's own catering company followed at the beginning of 2019. Delicacies are created from our own butcher's shop and are now also sold very successfully via vending machines.

The Ries family impressively demonstrates that pig production also has a future in Germany. The focus is on a clear orientation for more animal welfare and premium marketing. As the example also shows, it is not the size that matters but innovative ideas consistently put into practice.

Operational level of the pig farm:

• 45 ha of agricultural land (incl. leased area) for self-feed supply, including protein feed
• Own full-time workers for arable farming and pig production
• Own employees (incl. own butcher) for the catering company Baurerwanger
• 2020 Relocation of the farm with residential building, machine hall, a small butcher's shop and the outdoor climate pigsty (keeping level 3 to 4) with lots of straw and lying boxes for 25 sows, 200 piglets and 300 fattening pigs
• Marketing by own catering company "Bauerwanger.de" and EDEKA straw pig
